Submit Unit Opener and Closer Ideas for this Unit

Our students always have a hard time with the American Wei story. Other than loosing a tooth, the students always have difficulty connecting with what is going on in the story. So our Kinder classes got together and had a huge movie premier in the auditorium and watched the movie American Tale by Steven Spielberg. It is an older movie, so most of the students had never seen it before. It presents a really good introduction to the need for immigration and the problems of what happens when the dreams of the new land don't turn out the way you expect. The premier included popcorn and punch for the kids, and they really seemed to like it. Then we introduced the story, American Wei, and the students could make clearer connections to both the story and the movie. This could be used as the culminating activity, since the story comes near the end of the unit.
