Lesson Plan for Midnight Ride: |
Lesson Plan for Midnight Ride of Paul Revere by Francie KugelmanMy do a watercolor and Sharpie drawing of the Somerset boat that Paul Revere
rode past in “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere.” I found the instructions
online at this great website made by a now retired California teacher.
This website is great to explore! You can go on an interactive journey with
Paul Revere, your students can fold up a small model of Paul Revere’s home
too.
If you go to the Teacher’s Guide, in Exhibit Hall 4 there is a guided
drawing lesson of the *Somerset*, the British Man-of-War mentioned in *Paul Revere's Ride*. First we paint a beautiful watercolor background for the sunset on the ocean. After that dries, we do a guided drawing with Sharpees and rulers or the Somerset. The end product is stunning!
I have a Venn Diagram with sayings on it. The students have to decide if a
Patriot or a Loyalist would say this. We study the Tea Party, the
Intolerable Acts, the Stamp Act, (I charge money for paper that day). I
don’t focus on too many battles, but the students have to read about some of
them. I mention over and over again how long the war went on for.
There is a fantastic rap song of “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere”
originally written by Longfellow. I have the students sing this song every
day. We do a compare/contrast of what is in the poem and what really
happens. I am lucky as this is one of the Open Court “stories” we are
required to teach.
The name of the group is Razzle Bam Boom, and the CD I got the song from is “200 Years of American Music”. On their website they have a CD called
“Singing American History” which might be good if it contained “The Midnight Ride” . You can also get the song on iTunes. The song has a bit different musical accompaniment than the version I like. However, for 99 cents on iTunes, it is a great buy. Just type in Midnight Ride of Paul Revere to
find it. It is on their Rockology CD.
The version I love is only available on the group's website from the 200
Years of American Music CD. Here is the group's website.
Also, if you want the lyrics to their version of the Midnight Ride, here it
is.
