I have the kids break into groups such as Nosey Newsmen, Magnificent Magaziners, Artful Artists etc. but I have added 2 new groups. They are the Fabulous Photographers and the Creative Computer Nerds. The photographers are given a digital camera and given the assignment to photograph city wildlife around the school. They then transfer the pictures to the computer and make a poster of what they found. The computer nerds just use their computers to find pictures of anything relating to city wildlife and create a collage with words and those pictures. They can also create acrostics about the theme on the computer.
Take your students on a nature walk around your school. Everyone takes a spiral notebook and pencil. The notebook paper is divided in half the long way (like a hotdog bun). Label one column plants and the other animals. As you walk around with your class list all the city wildlife you find. This is a great way to lead into writing a short paragraph about the concept of city wildlife.
We read Stella Luna
and after a classroom discussion, used the responses to build a bulletin board.
