Butterfly House
(Itsy Bitsy Spider)
by H. Nolan
Saved a tiny worm, I did, saved it from a jay
Carried it inside, I id, quickly on that day
Laid the larva carefully, in an empty jar
And put a twig for it to climb
Though it couldn’t go far
Grandpa made a lid, he did paper soft and white
Put it in a box, he did, keeping down the light
Drew some pretty flowers then flowers purple-blue
A garden twig inside the box
Gave her quite a view
Hanging free inside, she did, in the chrysalis
Grew so fast inside, she did it was not amiss
Saw her swings all painted: orange and black and brown
And the little Painted lady
Flew all around the town
How the Guinea Fowl Got Its Spots
by H. Nolan
Spots, spots, she has lots
Guinea Fowl, amidst the howl
“Hey dear cow, You’re my friend
Just us two—‘til the end.”
“Yes, little one, you and me
we’ll trick the lion, wait and see.”
“Mr. Lion, you’d better behave
Because that cow, I will save.”
“Funny little fowl, did you say
I’d be catching a cow today?”
“No siree, can’t you see?
Friendship tricks—that’s the key.”
“Thank you, fowl, for helping me
have some milk…be speckly.”
“Thank you, cow, you’re my friend
Just us two—‘til the end.”
Hungry Little Hare
(Acrostic Poem)
by H. Nolan
C- crab spiders change color to look lie pretty flowers
A- animals hide in their surroundings
M- moth’s color matches the bark of a tree
O- often animals’ enemies are tricked bycamouflage
U- unable to find its prey, animals move on
F- frogs are green like the green grass
L- leaves of raspberry are the rabbit’s favorite food
A- always look before stepping on an animal
G- garter snakes will eat tiny frogs
E- every animal uses camouflage to be safe from its enemies
I See Animals Hiding
by H. Nolan
Animals hid—by staying inside
High in a tree—or deep in the sea
Woodcock weaves—through the leaves
Camouflaged deer-have no fear
Taking great care—is the Snowshoe hare
Blending with snow—it does go
Speckled trout—are out and about
Color and shape—help them escape
Smoke in the grass—will easily pass
Looking so brown—like branches laid down
